Life On Mars was by David Bowie, whose birth name is David Jones. He changed it in 1966 to avoid confusion with Davy Jones (David Thomas Jones) of The Monkees, so he chose the last name Bowie after the Alamo hero Jim Bowie and his famous Bowie Knife. He pronounces "Bowie" to rhyme with "Joey".
