Notes:
Song 6, Someone To Call My Lover, is a 2001’s hit by Janet Jackson. It used two samples. Its looped guitar riff is sampled from Amercia’s 1976 song Ventura Highway. For the loop played throughout the chorus, the song samples Gymnopedie No. 1, which is more than 100 years old.

Song 7 is also by America. (See previous posting ‘Connection 7 & 8)

Not a JJ's Fan!

No worry! It appears that a lot of you said you don’t know Song 6 (at least no one has admitted he/she is Janet Jackson’s fan). You don’t need to know the song; you just need to know the other song that was sampled in it!

Notes:
Song 11 is the classic "Runaway" by Del Shannon.

There is a line in Song 12: “Do you hear Del Shannon's "Runaway" playing on transistor radio waves?” At an interview in the late 90s, Steven Page and Ed Robertson both talked about When You Dream: ”Steve was watching his 2 day old son sleep and saw his eyelids flutter and realized that he was in REM sleep and probably dreaming. Then he started wondering - what can a baby, with no life experience yet, dream about? He can't really see properly yet - so is he just seeing shapes or memories from the womb? There are theories that babies are born knowing everything but by the time they can communicate that, they've forgotten everything - so maybe his dreams are complicated? Basically, what goes on in the minds of babies before they can communicate?” Ed went on talking about how they started the song as a lullaby and then added lots of noises to make it sound dreamy.

Cher?

Yannick suggested that the Connection 2/3 is Cher because she made a remix of "I still haven't found what I'm looking for". No, the real (I mean 'my') connection is less obscure than that.

Even with such a distinguish voice as Steven Page has, not too many of you know Song 12 is by BNL.

It's not the 'U'

A lot of the guesses on Connection 2/3 is 'U'. No, it's better than that!

So far, Laurie is leading with 7.5 points; followed by Steve with 6 points. Mick is up there but with a lot of lifelines!

Notes:

Song 7 is Tin Man. Tin Man is a character in the Wizard of Oz. The lyric of this song was built around the one line, "Oz never did give nothin' to the Tin Man, that he didn't already have." We all know that this is the obvious central theme of "The Wizard of Oz"...that all the characters already possessed the qualities that they were seeking.

Song 8 is by Toto which is also the name of Dorothy's dog in the Wizard of Oz. In an interview, Bobby Kimball (Toto's lead singer) confirms the story about the name: "Jeff Porcao and David Paich were sitting around watching 'The Wizard of Oz' one day and they came up with the name from the movie."

Volume 1 Goes Public

After many late nights, 14 songs are included in Volume 1. So far, about 15 of you (who, I think, hopefully, has the minimum standard of musical knowledge) have received a CD of Volume 1. Thanks Fiona for the idea a few years ago.

Each consecutive songs have a connection - musical or non-musical. There is also a connection between Songs 14 and 1.

Please send in your guess(es) to me (home email) when you think you have an answer, but before I post the answer. No internet cheating. I'll keep score.

The first connection between Songs 1 & 2 , which is the easiest, will be revealed in a few days. Then, every few days, I will post an answer to the connection that has received the most number of correct guesses.

Theory

Six degrees of separation is the theory that anyone on earth can be connected to any other person on the planet through a chain of acquaintances that has no more than five intermediaries. The concept is based on the idea that the number of acquaintances grows exponentially with the number of links in the chain, and so only a small number of links is required for the set of acquaintances to become the whole human population. (Wikipedia)

By extension, the same term is often used to describe any other setting in which some form of link exists between individual entities in a large set.

Therefore, any song can connect to any other song within five links.
